NAPOLI — Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis says central midfielder Jorginho is not a top penalty taker. He said it was better for the Italian national team to give Lorenzo Insigne a penalty .
“I’m sorry because they always ask them who is not a penalty taker,” said De Laurentiis explains quoted by Football Italia on Sunday (14/11).
Italy failed to lock in automatic qualification for the 2022 World Cup after a 1-1 draw against the Swiss visitors at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Saturday (13/11) early this morning.
The hosts had a hard time finding the points, falling behind to Silvan Widmer’s long-range goal, before being equalized through defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
The Euro 2020 champions could actually have packed three points had Jorginho’s penalty not floated over the Swiss crossbar.
De Laurentiis also spoke about the decision to take the penalty for Gli Azzurri. He has a suggestion that the white dot executioner be given to other players as well as the attacker who is often tasked with taking the execution.
“If Insigne stays on the pitch, will he take it? Maybe it would be better if he did,” continued De Laurentiis.
Brazil-born midfielder Jorginho who missed a penalty in the shootout against England in the Euro 2020 Final as well, has missed two penalties during World Cup qualifiers.
One of his failures to take a spot shot was also present at the meeting against Switzerland a few months ago.
